Mimi was one of my favorite models at the Art Students League of NY. She’d been there for years and would show up regularly as one of our models in Daniel Greene’s evening classes. I did a small portrait of her during this one-week pose and—wisely for a change—I chose to stop the painting early so as not to overwork it. There wasn’t enough time to justify a new painting though, so I pulled out some conté crayons and paper and did a few sketches from different angles. This is one of them.

This was one of the first paintings I did as a student at the Art Students League of NY. I wasn’t very sure of myself in the new environment, so I started out with pretty small canvases. A couple years later I entered it into an exhibition at the Salmagundi Club in NYC and it won the Windsor & Newton Material Prize. It also sold out of that show for a whopping $75—or which I received 50%. Hey… nothing to sneeze at back in those days. It was one of my first sales and I was happy.
