I started going to the Art Students League of NY in February, 1976. I chose to study with Daniel Greene because I really admired his work. Greene is probably best known for his pastel work, but he applies the same approach to painting in oils. His painting—like his teaching—is very methodical. But it retains a loose, painterly feel that belies his careful approach.
I’d only been there for a couple of months when I’d painted this one. It was something of a landmark for me, as I’d been trying to loosen up my own work since leaving the Stevenson Academy. I received a great grounding with Harold Stevenson, but His style was far too tight for me. I had come to admire the impressionists by then and wanted to move my work in that direction.
I certainly wouldn’t call this painting impressionistic, but compared to the way I’d been painting, it was a breakthrough.
