Ben was such an interesting model. He had a great face and an interesting personality. During breaks between poses, most (nude) models would put on a robe and wander around the room looking at paintings. Ben didn’t bother getting dressed again. He seemed pretty comfortable in his skin. Often he’d sort of squat—primate-style—on the corner of the model stand and munch on some snack he’d brought. If the breaks weren’t so short, his impromptu poses would have made great studies.

The way the paint is applied on this portrait, you can really see the pastels approach that was so much a part of Dan Greene’s style of teaching.

This is still one of my favorite little paintings. I did this in just a couple of sittings. Opting to stop working on it early, rather than risk overworking it and lose the loose, casual feel of it. I think my instinct with this was right.

There have been many paintings since that I wish I’d had the same sense with. The temptation to keep on going and fix one more thing can be the downfall of a good painting. You have to learn to trust yourself.
