Art & Fear: Observations On the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I bought this book…. It talks plainly and honestly about the internal struggles that come with trying to make art. It provides a ray of hope for someone like me—who hasn’t painted in a long time, but still wants to. It reminds me that I’m not alone in this and that fear is something that can be understood and overcome. It’s a good read, too.

Alla Prima: Everything I Know About Painting

by Richard Schmid.

This is a terrific book by one of my favorite painters. He packs a lot of good information and advice into 190 pages.

Carlson’s Guide to Landscape Painting

This book is a classic. The language is formal and somewhat stilted, but I don’t think there has been another book on the subject that is so clear and thorough.

The Artist’s Handbook of Materials and Techniques: Fifth Edition, Revised and Updated (Artists’ Handbook of Materials and Techniques)

This is a book that belongs on every artist’s bookshelf. Not something you look at often, but a valuable resource when you need it.

Van Gogh and Gauguin: The Search for Sacred Art

Van Gogh and Gauguin are two of my favorite artists and inspiration, and this is a beautifully done book.
